As Shabbat Begins . . .

The moon was so pretty here awhile back - 

just had to share it with you!

The Jewish day begins at sundown,

and as the moon rises on another beautiful Sabbath,

this is my wish for you!

It means 

"Sabbath Peace to you, dear friends -

Rest well, dear family of God"!

Red Box Recipes - Cocoa Ripple Ring

Today I'd like to share with you a special, down-home recipe from my family's treasured red recipe box!
It's one my Aunt Pauline gave my Mom - probably back in the 1970's when she first got a Bundt pan!

Cocoa Ripple Ring ~

Ingredients -                                                  

Cream together:  1/2 Cup shortening
                            3/4 Cup sugar
                            2 eggs

Sift together:  1-1/2 Cups flour

                       2 teaspoons baking powder 
                       3/4 teaspoon salt

Mix all of the above together alternately with 2/3 Cup milk - beat thoroughly.

Directions ~

Spoon 1/3 of the above mixture into a Bundt pan.  Sprinkle 1/3 Cup instant sweetened cocoa powder & 1/3 chopped nuts (walnuts work well) on top.  Then spoon half the remaining dough on top of the cocoa and nuts, and sprinkle another 1/3 Cup sweetened cocoa and 1/3 Cup nuts on that.  Top with the remaining dough mixture.  Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Red Box Recipes - Turkey, Green Bean, & Dressing Casserole

Here's a family favorite my Aunt Pauline shared with my Mom a few years back - so easy and dee-lish!!  (And you know we looooove "easy" around here!)

Ingredients ~

Prepare one package of dressing according to instructions on the box or bag.  Add celery, raisins and sausage to taste.  Place half the dressing on the bottom of a casserole dish.

Turkey - cut in small pieces and cooked.  (Great use for leftover turkey!)

One can of green beans

One can of mushroom or chicken soup

On top of the layer of dressing place the turkey, then the green beans, the soup (directly from can - no water added), and lastly place the rest of the dressing on top.  Bake at 350 degrees until the dressing is golden brown and done.  Enjoy!

Stitched with Love . . .

I just love vintage stitchery . . .

so warm, cozy, and stitched with love.

I love to imagine the dear, yet unknown lady

who spent so many, many hours carefully

designing and turning out her work

with needle and floss.

I wonder who she was?

Where did she live?

What was her life like?

This piece is very special - to me, anyway.

It hung for over forty years in my

grandparents farmhouse -

and was always a favorite of mine!

I don't know the dear soul who

made it, but I can tell you

(having worked on a large piece this size myself - 16" x 20")

that it probably took her several months

to complete it!

It now hangs in my livingroom -

a sweet reminder of happy days on their farm!

Kansas Sunsets . . .

Just happened to catch this as I was out

playing with my Kindle camera one evening . . .

near my home . . . 

thought you would enjoy!

Somebody Got Into Mommy's Yarn Drawer . . . ;)

While working at my computer the other evening,

I got something out of my lower desk drawer,

and absent-mindedly left it open.

When I looked again -

this is what I saw.

Now who could have done this???

Next thing I knew,

my livingroom floor looked like

this . . .

because *somebody-who-shall-remain-nameless*

got into his Mommy's yarn drawer . . .

for the first time EV-AH!!

I could have scolded, but goodness sakes,

how could I when he was having so much

FUN!!!!!

So, of course, I grabbed my

Kindle camera, and joined in the fun!!!

(That's me trying to hold a ball of blue yarn AND

the camera!!!)

And this was his response when I asked him,

"Now, what do you have to say for yourself???"

(Gotta love the whole "who, me??? looking away thing!!)

Shabbat Peace To You!

Adonai gave us - His beautiful Shabbat!

(Shabbat Is Hebrew for Sabbath).

Red Box Recipes - Quick & Easy Dessert

This one is sooooo easy, fast, and yummy!  My Aunt Pauline gave it to my Mom - back in 1961!

Quick Dessert ~ 

Ingredients -

1 Can Wilderness Pie Filling - any flavor.

1/2 package white cake mix (dry) patted down

1/4 pound margarine, melted

  Directions -

In a 5" x 8" Pyrex (glass) baking dish, pour in the pie filling.  Pour the white cake mix on top.  Pour the margarine over all.  Bake at 350 degrees til top is golden.

Down A Country Road - Golden Beauty

Kansas is known for it's beautiful sunsets,

and about an hour before then is the perfect time to

capture the outdoor lighting at it's best.

So one evening as I was out 

wandering the byways and back roads near my home, I 

came upon this simple, limestone building,

bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun.

As I understand the story,

it was built by the Boy Scouts,

back in the '30's or so -

and they held their meetings there.

Yes, there really is a lot of

loveliness to be found

 in the simple things of life!

Crock Pot Corn and Potato Chowder - Yummy Fall Fare!

There's a crispness in the air in Kansas these days - 

Fall is finally here!  Yay!

Today is kinda rainy-drizzly-cloudy outside,

so it's the perfect time for some yummy Fall delicious-ness!

So I cranked up my crock pot, and made one of my favorite soups -

"Crock Pot Corn and Potato Chowder!"

a great recipe I found via Pinterest at the

It's time to rejoice!!  Here at Little Prairie Home, the Sabbath or "Shabbat"
table is set, the candle is lit, and the Erev ("evening") Shabbat home service is about to begin!
The special bread we serve tonight is an ancient Hebrew tradition - Challah bread!
Above is a picture of one of my early attempts at making this sweet, braided bread.
(hmmmmm . . . need a little more practice!!  Just keepin' it real here!)

Red Box Recipes - Great Aunt Bertha's Ice Box Cookies

  I just adored my Great Aunt Bertha!  Spent quite a bit of time with her, in her teeny tiny little house, when I was growing up.  She taught me how to make paper doilies, gave me "very grown up" Gardenia scented stationery for my 10th birthday, and introduced me to "Bozo the Clown" on TV!  (Is my age showing just a little here??)  What a sweet, fun, Christian lady she was!

Back in the 1930's, she wrote this recipe down on a little card.  That was in the days before refrigerators - when you had to keep food fresh in an "Ice Box" - that had a big block of ice in the top compartment to keep things cold (for a few days, anyway!)  Then the Ice Man had to replenish your supply - by horse-drawn wagon - old fashioned goodness!

Ice Box Cookies -

Ingredients ~

1/2 Cup shortening
1 Cup brown sugar - "roll out lumps"
1 egg
Cream together and add -

1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-1/4 Cups flour - more if needed to make roll.
(Sifted together)

Chill overnight, slice, and bake in 350 degree oven.
(Doesn't say for how long - but these are done when the edges are lightly browned.  So you'll have to experiment!)

These were a favorite of mine as a child - and have a lightly sweet, old-fashioned flavor - Mmmmmm!!

Oak Creek School

"School days, school days

Dear old Golden Rule days

'Reading and 'riting and 'rithmetic,

Taught to the tune of the hick'ry stick

You were my queen in calico

I was your bashful, barefoot beau

And you wrote on my slate, "I Love You, Joe"

When we were a couple o' kids"

This was a popular song when my Grandpa attended
this little one-room schoolhouse in rural Kansas,
in the early 1900's.  I've had the privilege of going inside and
seeing it lovingly restored to the way things were in his day -
wooden desks and chairs with wrought iron legs,
cursive writing charts on the walls, original textbooks,
an American flag, and Kansas state flag at the front of the room -
with Abraham Lincoln and George Washington looking on!
And the teacher's large wooden desk up front.


My grandpa was not able to attend every day, as he had to
work on the farm  (at the age of 16!) -
but he came every day when the family he worked for could spare him.
He was an orphan by that age, but did very well in his life!
Eventually, he married one of the daughter's in that family,
who became my dear grandma -
and the rest, as they say, is history!


And I love and miss him!
